1. How did this sermon encourage, convict, or challenge you?
2. Why does it appear that the Pharisee was not a legalist? If this is true, then why is this man not justified? How can someone who gives God the credit for his righteousness not be right with God?
3. How does the gospel give us a proper understanding of ourselves? How do we balance the good things we do with humility and thankfulness? Compare Paul’s view of himself and his accomplishments in Philippians 3:4-11.
4. How does the gospel give us a proper understanding of others? How does it change the ways in we think, feel, and act toward others? Give specific examples.
5. How does the gospel give us a proper understanding of our purpose as a church? Are we a place for the sick? Or do they need to get well before they can come around us? What practical things can we do to meet, to embrace, and to show compassion toward the “sinners” around us?
