These questions go with the sermon from Mark 9:42-50 preached on October 24th. Click on the notes tab to the left to download a pdf of the questions.

1. How did Sundayʼs sermon on “Warring Against Sin” convict, challenge, or encourage you?

2. The battle against the flesh never ends in this life. Why has God set things up this way? Why do you think we would prefer a one time knock-down-drag-out-fight to settle it?

3. Satanʼs deception in the garden is the same pattern used by the flesh in our lives. Look closely at the story of the Fall, in Genesis 3:1-6. How did the Serpent persuade Eve to eat? Talk about his deception in detail: What did he hide or disguise? What did he accentuate, and how did he make sin attractive?

4. While itʼs true that the new life of the Spirit in us resists every work of the flesh (Galatians 5:17), sometimes we donʼt sense the struggle. What things could distract a believer from the war waging in his or her own soul? How could he or she pay greater attention to this war?

5. What means has God given us to win the battle against sin? If your ability to defeat sin in your life depends upon your use of these means, how well are you doing?

6. Test Case: Your child or roommate has been persuaded to believe that Jesus came only to forgive his or her sins, not to make him holy. What Scriptures would you use to convince him otherwise? What difference does it make if he came only to forgive and not to make us holy?
