These questions go with the sermon on Psalm 118 preached on December 6th. To download a pdf of the questions, click the notes tab to the left.

1. How did this week’s sermon on Psalm 118 convict, challenge, or encourage you?

2. Why does studying theology (the doctrine of God) matter for our everyday lives? How does our theology affect the hope that we have in this life and for the next?

3. Think of a time in which the Lord worked mightily in your past to bring you deliverance? Testify to his goodness and explain how this gives you hope for the future.

4. What heart issues are at work in a person who is constantly gripped with fear, uneasiness, paranoia, or distrust in the Lord? How does a person battling these issues find hope in the Lord? Is it enough to just tell them, ‘Quit being fearful,’?

5. Explain how the psalmist’ hope of one coming in the name of the Lord relates to the Christmas stories of Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2. What characters do we find, especially in Luke, waiting for the hope of Israel?

6. Read Romans 8:31-39. How does the rejection of Jesus Christ, the cornerstone, give us hope for the future? Does ‘all things’ mean that we will always be healthy, safe, and happy? Are we hoping that everything is going to go well for us, or are we hoping for something greater?
